Losing weight is a common New Year’s resolution...but is that really all your body and mind need this year? Instead of setting only a goal to shed pounds, set a goal to be your healthiest self. This doesn’t necessarily mean starting a new fad diet or joining your local gym. Instead, it means adjusting your mindset and finding new motivation to be healthy.
Enjoy a year inspired by more than just weight loss. Make these part of your 2018 resolution:
A weight loss plateau could very well be because of what you eat. Eating healthy might not mean slashing your calorie count or giving up your favorite foods. Instead, it means nourishing your body with the nutrients it needs to thrive. Start simple in the New Year, with a beginner’s guide to healthy eating. Cut out processed foods and go for whole foods and veggies instead. The more foods you eat that help your body and brain, the better you’ll feel – and the better you’ll perform during workouts.
Get More Sleep
Lack of sleep is a significant deterrent to a healthy mind and body. Not getting enough quality sleep time can increase your risk of obesity, heart disease, and diabetes. You need at least eight hours of sleep to function at your optimal performance level. Getting enough sleep can boost your energy, decrease risk of injuries, help you make better decisions, ward off medical conditions, and even help you lose weight.
Take Care of Your Mental Health
Depression, stress, and anxiety can lead to unhealthy eating and exercise habits. This year, make it a goal to focus as much energy and attention on your mental health as your physical health. Practice yoga and meditation, or sign up for regular massages to bring your stress levels down. A happy mind decreases cortisol levels, a stress hormone that can increase the amount of fat your body stores. Take time to relax and destress, and watch weight loss naturally follow.
Try Occupational Therapy
Join a health and wellness program that’s suited for your unique needs and goals. An occupational therapy program can help you live with mental illness, improve nutrition, and achieve weight loss goals. Social support in these programs can make all the difference in your level of participation and success.
When you focus on being healthy, instead of just losing weight, the results (physical, mental, and emotional) may surprise you. Enjoy more energy, positive self-perceptions, and have more fun with friends and family with the right mindset. Make 2018 your year to shine.
