3 Things You Need to Know About Laser Hair Removal

What Is Laser Hair Removal?

Many of us dream of silky-smooth skin, free of unsightly hairs – and tossing all our razors, waxes, and shaving creams for good. There is a solution to these frustrating body hair woes: laser hair removal.

Using a cosmetic, medical-grade laser, the laser hair removal process transmits a beam of light into your hair follicles. The process depends on your skin pigment, with the laser being attracted to the blood around hair follicles for darker skin types and the pigment of hair follicles for lighter skin types. This results in stunted hair follicle growth and smooth skin.

While this procedure may seem like a miracle cure, there are risks involved in the process, as well as important preparation and after-care techniques. Here's what you need to know before going under the laser.

Identify What Areas for Laser Hair Removal

This process works best on the bikini line, above the lips and around the chin, and under the arms. You can also opt for laser hair removal on your legs, arms, and anywhere else you want to remove hair from. If you’re uncertain about a body part, consult with a licensed laser hair removal technician.

Prepare Beforehand

You should avoid sun exposure for 2-4 weeks prior to laser hair removal. The technician can’t perform the process if you’re sunburned or have a tan. Many people start their treatments in colder months to effectively avoid the sun.

In addition, you will need to shave the area you want to be lasered before your appointment. Do not wax the area – the hair follicle needs to be present for laser removal to work, and waxing removes the follicle. If you forget to shave, you can do so at your appointment.

Be Patient and Consistent

You won’t leave your first laser hair removal appointment with the silky-smooth skin of your dreams. You will need to attend at least 5-6 hair removal sessions to see optimal results. You will also need to be consistent in your appointment attendance – successful patients usually receive a treatment every 4-6 weeks, and they see results within 3 months.
